2019 Pinot Gris SJ

Tasting note December 2021
Scent:
Medium bodied. Delicate woody aromas over a base of subtle ripe pears.
Palate:
Then apple-pear compote on the palate. Great richness. The very long ageing on the lees gives a lot of creaminess. The wine is enormously elegant despite its power. The medium acidity fits perfectly. No bitterness at all.
Still a little youthful and only medium long in the finish.
This wine needs a few more years to build up its aromatic fullness and length.

WINEMAKERS NOTES The Grauburgunder grapes come from our oldest vineyard Bischoffinger Steinbuck (over 50 years old). The soil type is 100% volcanic soil. We manage our vineyards strictly according to the guiding principle “Quality is created in the vineyard”. At SJ, the yield is reduced to one grape per shoot.

In 2019, we again had a harvest at the normal time from mid-September. In such years, a beautiful fruit aroma develops in the berries before the must weight shoots up too much. It was a relaxed harvest with ideal weather and no botrytis infections.

The hand-picked, healthy grapes were gently pressed as whole bunches in the cellar. The fermentation took place 50% in new and 50% in used 500l barrels.

Serving Suggestions: Goes very well with veal cheeks, turkey, duck and pork.
The optimal drinking temperature is 8-12°C.
